Economy Is Good, but Uncertainty Persists
For most of this decade, evening skies for Vermont's economy have been rosy red, but while professionnal observers are uniformly optimistic about prospects for the near future, they are keeping a wary eye on the morning sky. The state's economy is generally robust, benefitting from the longest sustained period of growth in the national economy in this century. How Many Malls Are Enough?
A new phrase is making the rounds in some business, political and regulatory circles -- \"the malling of Vermont.\" What officials are referring to is the recent push to build additional shopping mall space. The trend is most visible in Chittenden and Rutland Counties, the site of the state's two largest cities. In those two areas, more than 2.5 million square feet of additional retail space is on the drawing boards. Some of the projects are being reviewed by either local or state regulatory bodies. One major project is already approved and others are only in the discussion stage. (excerpt)
