Interregional Breeding Dispersal of Adult Roseate Terns
Long-distance breeding dispersal is infrequent among seabirds and has rarely been quantified. Six adult Roseate Terns (Sterna dougallii) that had bred at colony sites in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, USA from 2004–2006 switched regions and moved 200–400 km to two colony sites in Maine between 2005 and 2007. Two of the emigrants presumably had nested for at least eight years in Massachusetts before moving to Maine, demonstrating that even long-time philopatric residents of one region may switch to another region.
Nocturnal predation on common terns by great black-backed gulls
We observed nocturnal predation by Great Black-backed Gulls (Larus marinus) on eggs and chicks of Common Terns (Sterna hirundo) at a restored tern colony on the coast of southern Maine. Dissection of a nocturnal predatory gull in 1994 revealed two 7d old chicks, 3 embryonic chicks and 5 eggs. Further observations implicating nocturnal predation by gulls on tern eggs in 1995 confirmed that Great Black-backed Gulls can raid tern nesting colonies during moderate to low nocturnal light conditions.
Officials seek to restore Maine islands' air service
Dec. 15--OWLS HEAD, Maine -- Knox County business and government leaders scrambled Tuesday to find a way to continue air service to Vinalhaven, North Haven, Matinicus, Islesboro and Swans islands after Maine Atlantic Aviation announced Monday it was discontinuing its flights. Summer residents wanting to skip the ferry and get to their island house for a weekend getaway, or year-round residents needing to get to an off-island appointment and return home the same day would call Maine Atlantic, [Jeff Northgraves] said, and book a chartered flight. Northgraves said a temporary -- and possibly long-term -- fix is in the works. Kevin Waters, Maine Atlantic's chief pilot, wants to take over the flight service but first must secure aircraft, FAA approval and insurance coverage. Those are no small tasks, he said.
