Effect of Changing Climatic Conditions on Properties of Wood Textile Composites
Wood–textile composites (WTCs), consisting of polypropylene and woven willow wood, have potential for both interior and exterior applications. However, their basic materials are not inherently resistant to outdoor weathering. This study examines the impact of various climatic conditions on the material behavior of WTCs. The composite and its components were aged under different scenarios, including kiln-drying, frost, standard and tropical climate, and artificial weathering and water storage, and analyzed for dimensional stability, chemical changes (FTIR), mechanical damage (µ-CT), and mechanical performance. While kiln-drying, frost, and tropical climates had only minor effects, water storage caused swelling-related damage, resulting in a 45% decrease in Young’s modulus but increased elongation at break (+88%) and impact strength (+75%). Artificial weathering led to significant degradation: tensile strength declined by 28%, Young’s modulus by 49%, and impact strength by 26%. In the medium term, this degradation compromises the integrity of the composite. The results highlight the need for effective stabilization measures—such as polymer modification or structural protection—to ensure the long-term durability of WTCs in outdoor use.
Application of Textile Composite Materials as a Sorbent for Cleaning Up Oil Spills
This article compares two new textile materials used to clean up spills of oil or two oil products (crude oil, diesel fuel, and base oil SN 150). The plain-woven cotton fabric is hydrophilic, with a typical porous structure. After coating with a layer of chitosan modified with benzaldehyde and cross-linked with glutaraldehyde (CB), its hydrophobicity increases, hence the sorption affinity to hydrophobic hydrocarbons. Including in situ synthesized zinc oxide particles in the hydrophobic chitosan layer (CBZ) changes its structure and increases the sorption capacity. The morphology of the layers was assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and by comparing the contact angles of the pollutants against the cotton fabric and the composite materials. EDX analysis and mapping for the Zn element show that zinc is homogeneously distributed on the fabric surface. The roughness enhancement and mesoporous structure under the influence of zinc oxide particles were established by the Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) method and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The advantages of textile composites are their flexibility, stability, and ability to float on the water and wipe up oil spills. It was found that the materials can be successfully regenerated and used repeatedly, making them highly effective because the sorbed crude oil or petroleum products can be separated and utilized.
Mechanical Properties and Failure Mechanism of a Carbon Fiber/Silicone Rubber High-Temperature Flexible Textile Composite
To optimize the aerodynamic performance of the aircraft across its entire cross-section, wing shape control must be maintained based on flight operating conditions. A high-temperature flexible textile composite, which is the key to achieving the deformation of an aircraft wing, is urgently required in the deformable structure of high-speed aircraft. In this work, a novel type of flexible textile composite with enhanced temperature resistance was fabricated by plain-woven carbon fibers coated with silicone rubber. The material testing was carried out in a wind tunnel to simulate both the harsh temperature field distribution and the mechanical loads caused by aerodynamic forces under the flight profile. For the first time, temperatures exceeding 1000 °C were attained on the windward side of an aircraft wing with a peak recorded temperature of 1600 °C. The failure mechanisms of the flexible composites are revealed, and the thermal stability of the composites is evaluated. The results show that the significant tensile anisotropy in the flexible composites is along different off-axis angles, and the failure modes also change with the off-axis angle. The material does not show significant high-temperature oxidation ablation under thermo-mechanical coupling. This work reveals that under the triple action of such high temperatures, stress caused by wing surface tensioning, and the mechanical load caused by aerodynamic forces, the failure mechanism of the flexible textile composite is dominated by the mechanical load at high temperatures rather than by thermal instability, as is conventionally claimed.
A novel photocatalytic sheath/core bicomponent fibre for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus inactivation
The coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) has become a global pandemic, leading to severe health issues such as pneumonia, organ failure, and death. Face masks made of non-woven textiles have been widely used to protect against SARS-CoV-2, but concerns arose regarding the potential infection from contaminated masks. To address this, titanium dioxide, a photocatalyst, shows promise in antimicrobial applications, including virus inhibition. This study explores the development of a sheath-core bicomponent fibre with a polypropylene core and a sheath containing an Ag and Zr co-doped TiO2 photocatalyst (AZT). Zr-Ag-TiO2 The fibres were produced using a double-extrusion spinning system, and the effects of the sheath-core ratio (50:50 and 80:20 w/w) and AZT content (1-3 wt%) on mechanical and antiviral properties were analysed. The fibres demonstrated improved mechanical strength and thermal stability, with the highest anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity (99.91%) observed in fibres with 2 wt% AZT at a 50:50 ratio after 30 min of fluorescent irradiation.
Experimental and numerical characterization of tensile property of jute/carbon fabric reinforced epoxy hybrid composites
Jute based green composites are emerging materials due to their certain attractive properties like appropriate strength to weight ratio, high damping ratio, low price and corrosion resistance. Jute/carbon hybrid composite can replace carbon fiber reinforced composites without much loss in tensile strength. These hybrid composites are now  being used in various automobile interior and exterior parts. In this study tensile behavior of carbon/jute reinforced epoxy hybrid textile composites, for different volume fractions of carbon and jute fibers, is studied experimentally and numerically. Tensile behavior of composite materials is always required for design and analysis of any structure. It is found that with increase in jute percentage tensile strength of hybrid composite decrease. Numerical results agrees well with experimental results and error increases with increase in jute percentage due to heterogeneous jute properties and waviness of fabrics. Fractographic study reveals that delamination phenomenon exists in between plies and jute fiber shows more pullout than carbon fiber. Scanning electron microscope analysis depicted that matrix fails in form of fragmentation while fibers show pullout during failure.
Mechanical Analysis and Simulation of Wood Textile Composites
Wood Textile Composites (WTCs) represent a new and innovative class of materials in the field of natural fiber composites. Consisting of fabrics made from willow wood strips (Salix americana) and polypropylene (PP), this material appears to be particularly suitable for structural applications in lightweight construction. Since the threads of the fabric are significantly oversized compared to classic carbon or glass rovings, fundamental knowledge of the mechanical properties of the material is required. The aim of this study was to investigate whether WTCs exhibit classic behavior in terms of fiber composite theory and to classify them in relation to comparable composite materials. It was shown that WTCs meet all the necessary conditions for fiber-reinforced composites in tensile, bending, and compression tests and can be classified as natural-fiber-reinforced polypropylene composites. In addition, it was investigated whether delamination between the fiber and matrix can be simulated by using experimentally determined mechanical data as input. Using finite element analysis (FEA), it was shown that the shear stress components of a stress tensor in the area of the interface between the fiber and matrix are responsible for delamination in the composite material. It was also shown that the resistance to shear stress depends on the geometric conditions of the reinforcing fabric.
Effect of Defects on Progressive Failure Behavior of Plain Weave Textile Composites
Various types of internal defects occur during manufacturing and handling of composite materials. It is practically impossible to manufacture composite structures without defects, making it crucial to understand the effect of defects on their failure behavior to maintain structural safety. In this work, the effect of pre-defects on the failure behavior of plain weave textile composites was studied. Unit cell configurations with symmetric, in-phase, and shifted fiber tow arrangements were considered. Inter-laced warp and fill tows and matrix pockets of plain weave unit cells were modeled in three-dimensional finite elements, and cohesive elements were inserted between all bulk elements to account for the fracture modes of the fiber and matrix direction failure of warp and fill tows, matrix pocket failure, and interface failure. Unit cell models containing pre-defects of voids, tow-matrix pocket separation, warp-fill tow separation, and cracks in the warp and fill tows were analyzed, and their effects on progressive failure behavior were investigated in terms of the interaction between fiber tow arrangements and defects. Results indicated that initial failure occurred in matrix-direction failure mode in fill tows, whereas fiber tow-matrix pocket separation was the major failure mode under uniaxial tensile load. Furthermore, failure behavior was found to be highly dependent on the fiber tow arrangement pattern and the location of pre-defects.
Development and testing of material extrusion additive manufactured polymer–textile composites
The adoption of Additive Manufacturing (AM) has gradually transformed the fashion industry through innovation and technology over the last decade. Novel AM systems and techniques are continuously being developed, leading to the application of AM polymers with textiles and fabrics in the fashion industry. This work investigates the development and testing of polymer–textile composites using polylactic acid (PLA) filaments on synthetic mesh fabrics using direct material extrusion (ME). An aspect of this paper highlights the appropriate combination of printing material, textile substrate, and printer settings to achieve excellent polymer–textile adhesion. Details of the printing process to create polymer–textile composites are described, as are the interfacial strength results of the T-peel tests, and the observed failure modes post-testing. The peel strengths for different ME bonded polymer–textile composites are examined and used to identify the compatibility of materials. This work visualised the potential of direct ME of polymers onto textile fabrics as a material-joining approach for new textile functionalisation, multi-material composite explorations and innovative aesthetic print techniques. This work also adds to the limited knowledge of AM polymer–textile composites, which can provide helpful information for designers and researchers to develop new applications and facilitate future research development in smart embedded and programmable textiles.
Process-Induced Distortions Characterization of MBWK Fabric Reinforced Composite Helmet Shell
In order to characterize the process-induced distortions of 3D thin shell composites with complex shape, the multilayered biaxial weft knitted (MBWK) fabric reinforced high-performance composite helmet was selected as the research object, and the 3D laser scanning machine was used to scan the helmet surface, then the 3D scanning data was compared with the CAD model to evaluate the deformation. The results and discussion indicated that the conventional method was workable, but the speed of convergence was slow and the calculation results were easy to drop into local optimization. According to detailed analysis, a measurement method focusing on the principle of “Feature Distance” was developed. The measurement results shown that this method can not only give accurate results, but also reduce working procedure and greatly save the computing resources, which is proved to be a feasible approach for the deformation measurement foundation of 3D thin shell textile composites.
