Evolution of seismic hazard maps in Turkey
A review on the historical evolution of seismic hazard maps in Turkey is followed by summarizing the important aspects of the updated national probabilistic seismic hazard maps. Comparisons with the predecessor probabilistic seismic hazard maps as well as the implications on the national design codes conclude the paper.
Multi-criteria of wind-solar site selection problem using a GIS-AHP-based approach with an application in Igdir Province/Turkey
Sustainable sources like wind, solar, and geothermal power are defined as a clean source of renewable energy which has a less harmful impact on the environment than other energy sources such as coal, natural gas and oil. Turkey is one of the energy-importing countries where air pollution has been become an inevitable environmental concern. Thus, investments on sustainable sources have been developed rapidly in recent years in Turkey. This paves the way for studying a site selection problem considering both solar and wind energy in Igdir Province located in the east part of Turkey. In the literature, there are many studies on solar-wind energy to select a desirable site for both energy sources, and many solution techniques have been proposed dealing with this problem. In this study, one of multi-criteria decision-making methods named analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and geographical information systems (GIS) are used to determine suitable site selection for solar-wind energy investigating four counties of Igdir: Tuzluca, Igdir Central, Karakoyunlu and Aralik. The aim of this work is first to investigate possible locations for solar-wind power plant installation using a mapping method, GIS, and then, AHP is applied to the problem to obtain optimum areas for both solar-wind energy. Also, more accurate results are provided comparing results of two methods, GIS and AHP. The results reveal that 524.5 km 2 for solar power plant and 147.2 km 2 for wind turbine are suitable while only 49.1 km 2 is suitable for solar-wind power plan installation.
Determining the bioclimatic comfort in Kastamonu City
Bioclimatic comfort defines the optimal climatic conditions in which people feel healthy and dynamic. Bioclimatic comfort mapping methods are useful to urban managers and planners. For the purposes of planning, climatic conditions, as determined by bioclimatic comfort assessments, are important. Bioclimatic components such as temperature, relative humidity, and wind speeds are important in evaluating bioclimatic comfort. In this study of the climate of Kastamonu province, the most suitable areas in terms of bioclimatic comfort have been identified. In this context, climate values belonging to the province of Kastamonu are taken from a total of nine meteorological stations. Altitude (36–1050 m) between stations is noted for revealing climatic changes. The data collected from these stations, including average temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed values are transferred to geographical information system (GIS) using ArcMap 10.2.2 software. GIS maps created from the imported data has designated the most suitable comfort areas in and around the city of Kastamonu. As a result, the study shows that Kastamonu has suitable ranges for bioclimatic comfort zone. The range of bioclimatic comfort value for Kastamonu is 17.6 °C. It is between a comfort ranges which is 15–20 °C. Kastamonu City has suitable area for bioclimatic comfort.
Active fault database of Turkey
We have updated the active fault map of Turkey and built its database within GIS environment. In the study, four distinct active fault types, classified according to geochronological criteria and character, were delineated on the 1:25,000 base map of Turkey. 176 fault segments not included in the former active fault map of Turkey, have been identified and documented. We infer that there are 485 single fault segments which are substantially potential seismic sources. In total 1964 active-fault base-maps were transferred into the GIS environment. Each fault was attributed with key parameters such as class, activity, type, length, trend, and attitude of fault plane. The fault parameters are also supported by slip-rate and seismogenic depth inferred from available GPS, seismological and paleoseismological data. Additionally, expected maximum magnitude for each fault segment was estimated by empirical equations. We present the database in a parametric catalogue of fault segments to be of interest in earthquake engineering and seismotectonics. The study provides essential geological and seismological inputs for regional seismic hazard analysis of all over Turkey and its vicinity.
Site selection by using the multi-criteria technique—a case study of Bafra, Turkey
Population growth, which is the main source of the biggest problems of the world today, combined with migration from rural areas to urban centers, causes the urban centers to be even more concentrated. This necessitates the opening of new residential areas in many city centers, but new residential areas are mostly determined by the decisions of local authorities, who may not base their decisions on scientific data. With the wrong area selection, ordinary natural events can be potentially catastrophic. Such events can result in large numbers of casualties and material damage every year. In this study, an example of applying a method for location selection using various parameters has been realized. The study focuses on Bafra, Turkey (the study area). Risk maps were created in terms of floods and overflows; maps of regions and high-voltage power transmission lines that enjoy a protected area status; and maps of regions in terms of biocomfort suitability. As a result of the evaluation made according to these criteria, it is calculated that only 1.96% of the total working area is suitable for use as a residential area. In relevant literature studies, it was observed that the studies related to the selection of residential areas were carried out only depending on a single standard or criterion. Some suggested biocomfort, and others used vulnerability to risks such as landslide, flood, and earthquakes as their main principle. Studies based on multi-criteria were generally used for purposes such as solid waste site selection and determination of the road routes. The study aims to shed light on the multi-criteria method in an attempt to standardize it in regional planning studies and to inspire similar studies in which different criteria can be used to achieve the maximum efficiency.
