\"All these people dying-it just doesn't make sense,\" says Lauren Silverman, a friend of [Kevin Keane]'s. \"When I leave home now, instead of being like 'I've got to go, Mom,' I'm like, 'I love you, Mom.' It really makes you think.\"

Head1 Head1 Head1
Unfortunately for the West Henderson faithful, running back Travis Smalling (38 rushes for 259 yards, 3 TDs) and the Pisgah Black Bears (5-2, 2-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference) were too much for the Falcons (2-5, 1-2) in a 24-21 victory. \"This was a tough one to swallow,\" said Falcon head coach Paul Whitaker. \"No one gave us a chance and the kids took it personal.\" \"We kept fighting back and gave a great team effort. But give a lot of credit to Pisgah, they are a good football team\" Whitaker said.

Gimmicky script doesn't overcome all sins
2008
The setting is the teeming Plaza Mayor, or central square, in Salamanca, Spain (re-created for logistical reasons in Mexico City), where US President Ashton ([William Hurt]) has journeyed to sign a multinational agreement that will \"put a stranglehold on international terrorism\". If you think that makes the terrorists happy, you've got a lot to learn. We initially view this setup through the eyes of Rex Brooks ([Sigourney Weaver]), a harried TV news producer. We are with her in the network truck when the unthinkable happens: shots are fired at the president and, moments later, even more chaos ensues. When this segment ends, the clock gets wound back to the beginning of the story and we see the same thing from the vantage point of Thomas Barnes ([Dennis Quaid]), a heroic Secret Service agent who, thanks to the support of fellow agent Kent Taylor ([Matthew Fox]), has returned to duty in Salamanca after having taken a bullet for this same president several months earlier.

Backtracking takes toll on terrorist tale
2008
Vantage Point (Starring Dennis Quaid, William Hurt, Forest Whitaker. Directed by Pete Travis. M. State Cinema) --- The idea of telling a story from different viewpoints is hardly new but requires a fine balance between maintaining excitement, tension or interest while providing plot repetition and development. Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon would be an obvious praiseworthy example of carrying out this tricky feat successfully; Vantage Point too often seems like a mix of Groundhog Day, Run Lola Run and TV's 24. It does this no less than five more times, starting with Secret Service agent Thomas Barnes (Dennis Quaid) who's protecting US President Ashton (William Hurt). Barnes recently took a bullet meant for the president, and some of his fellow agents doubt that he's fit for such duty again - but Barnes has the backing of the agent-in-charge (Mathew Fox).

REWINDING MAKES TENSE POINT
2008
The tricky business here is showing, from half a dozen points of view, a terrorist attempt on the life of a U.S. president (William Hurt) during an anti-terrorism summit in Spain. Scenic Salamanca hurtles by at a blur as we follow a cable news network's coverage of a speech that ends with shots fired and explosions. Testy exchanges between a reporter (Zoe Saldana, the least-convincing player in the cast) and her producer (Sigourney Weaver) suggest this network doesn't want to cover the protesters within the crowded plaza's cheering crowd.

Vantage has no perspective; Star power can't save flawed script and implausible scenario
2008
Not only did [Pete Travis] -- the filmmaker behind the real-life terror story Omagh -- manage to capture the grainy look of '70s films, he attracts some headline talent to the mix in small parts -- lending the film dramatic legitimacy with names such as [Sigourney Weaver], [Forest Whitaker] and [Dennis Quaid] on the credits. A long, frustrating piece of filmmaking that takes itself so seriously you half expect William Hurt to start quoting Abraham Lincoln's Eulogy for Henry Clay, Vantage Point's central flaw is the script from newcomer Barry Levy. The producer, played by Weaver, is taking a hard line with one of the reporters on-site -- but not for delivering a truly wooden stand- up on national network news. She's giving her a hard time because she's not putting a happy face on the story at hand: The president of the United States (William Hurt) has approved a worldwide anti- terrorist initiative and he's unveiling it before a crowd in Spain.
