Abstract This is the first study to report the plastic ingestion by Prochilodus lineatus in Brazilian fluvial ecosystems. We examined 32 individuals collected in two contrasting lotic environments: the highly polluted Tietê River and its much less degraded tributary, Peixe River. Most individuals, 71.88%, contained plastic in their digestive tract, with averages of 3.26 and 9.37 particles per individual in the tributary and main river, respectively. The blue color was predominant among the observed plastic particles and size ranged from 0.18 to 12.35 mm. Plastic ingestion must be accidental, predominantly, since the species has an iliophagous eating habit. As this species is regionally the most important fishery resource, potential adverse effects of this type of contamination may be transferred to human consuming populations. Mitigation measures against pollution are urgent in the Tietê River basin. Resumo Este é o primeiro estudo a relatar a ingestão de plástico por Prochilodus lineatus em ecossistemas fluviais brasileiros. Nós examinamos 32 indivíduos coletados em dois ambientes lóticos contrastantes: o rio Tietê, altamente poluído, e seu tributário muito menos degradado, o rio do Peixe. A maioria dos indivíduos, 71,88%, continha plástico em seus tratos digestivos, com médias de 3,26 e 9,37 partículas por indivíduo no tributário e no rio principal, respectivamente. A cor azul foi predominante entre as partículas plásticas observadas e o tamanho variou de 0,18 a 12,35 mm. A ingestão de plástico deve ser predominantemente acidental, uma vez que a espécie possui um hábito alimentar iliófago. Como esta espécie constitui o recurso pesqueiro mais importante regionalmente, potenciais efeitos adversos desse tipo de contaminação podem ser transferidos para populações humanas consumidoras. Medidas de mitigação contra a poluição são urgentes na bacia do rio Tietê.

Analysis of larval antigens of Cephalopina titillator in the camel mucus for diagnosis of infestation

Serodiagnostic test for the diagnosis of infestation of camels by the camel nasal fly, Cephalopina titillator was examined. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique was used to analyze and compare the production of antibodies in the camel mucus against salivary gland contents (SGc), excretory-secretory products (ESP), digestive tract contents (DTc) antigens from 2â¿áµ and 3ʳᵠlarval instars of C. titillator sampled in summer and winter. ELISA characterization of larval antigens showed that the presence of C. titillator larvae in camel, Camelus dromedarius, resulted in higher antibody titer in mucus samples of infested camels collected in winter than those collected in summer in both L2 and L3. In L2, the most antigenic secretion was SGc > ESP > DTc, but in L3 ESP > SGc > DTc. The antibody titers in camel mucus are affected by the intensity of infestation with C. titillator.

Determining the trophic linkage of the red-crowned crane Grus japonensis in Zhalong wetland in northeastern China

signatures in the red-crowned crane species were in the range of −17.8‰to −18.5‰and 6.9‰to 8.1‰, respectively. The majority of the ecosystem of Zhalong wetland has an average food-chain length of 3.9, and the trophic level of the examined species, i.e., red-crowned crane, was approximately 3.1. The trophic relations of red-crowned cranes have changed over the period of 2004 to 2014, as the biological species in the bottom trophic level significantly exhausted in the past years. The conflict of food demand by red-crowned cranes versus the livelihood demand of local wetland residents should be resolved to ensure sustainability of food supply sustainable for rare and extinguishable species.

Impact of diet in shaping gut microbiota revealed by a comparative study in children from Europe and rural Africa

Gut microbial composition depends on different dietary habits just as health depends on microbial metabolism, but the association of microbiota with different diets in human populations has not yet been shown. In this work, we compared the fecal microbiota of European children (EU) and that of children from a rural African village of Burkina Faso (BF), where the diet, high in fiber content, is similar to that of early human settlements at the time of the birth of agriculture. By using high-throughput 16S rDNA sequencing and biochemical analyses, we found significant differences in gut microbiota between the two groups. BF children showed a significant enrichment in Bacteroidetes and depletion in Firmicutes (P < 0.001), with a unique abundance of bacteria from the genus Prevotella and Xylanibacter, known to contain a set of bacterial genes for cellulose and xylan hydrolysis, completely lacking in the EU children. In addition, we found significantly more short-chain fatty acids (P < 0.001) in BF than in EU children. Also, Enterobacteriaceae (Shigella and Escherichia) were significantly underrepresented in BF than in EU children (P < 0.05). We hypothesize that gut microbiota coevolved with the polysaccharide-rich diet of BF individuals, allowing them to maximize energy intake from fibers while also protecting them from inflammations and noninfectious colonic diseases. This study investigates and compares human intestinal microbiota from children characterized by a modern western diet and a rural diet, indicating the importance of preserving this treasure of microbial diversity from ancient rural communities worldwide.

The Atlantic blue crab Callinectes sapidus (Decapoda, Portunidae) Rathbun, 1896 is native to the east coasts of North and South America and has recently expanded its distribution in the non-native range into the Gulf of Cadiz (SW Iberian Peninsula, Europe). Considering the impacts caused by this invasive species in numerous estuarine ecosystems and its generalist feeding behavior, this study aims to provide the first account of the Atlantic blue crab diet on the East Atlantic coast. We studied the species’ feeding habits using stomach content analyses to predict food web interactions and putative impacts. Samples were obtained in the Guadalquivir estuary (SW Spain, Europe), which was colonized in 2017. The main food items identified on their stomach were, fish (49.9%), mollusks (44.4%) and crabs (32.3%). They also consumed plant material (27.2%), and the sediment (32.3%) in their digestive tract was likely the result of secondary ingestion. The Atlantic blue crab exhibited the same omnivorous behavior as in the native area. There was no sexual variation in diet composition or feeding activity in general, but there was a seasonal variation in the diet composition of females. The decrease of the caramote prawn Penaeus kerathurus (Forskål 1775) observed in the Guadalquivir estuary since 2021 is likely not due to the Atlantic blue crab because they seldomly eat this prey. Overall, our study provides clear baseline information to expand the knowledge about the ecological roles of the Atlantic blue crab in non-native ecosystems.

Presence of microplastics in human stomachs

This study presents the first definitive confirmation of microplastic presence in the human stomach, based on samples from 26 cadavers. 97 microplastic particles were extracted from stomach contents, across all 26 individuals, revealing a universal prevalence of microplastics in the cadavers. Morphological analysis of the extracted particles unveiled distinct shapes, with fibers constituting the majority (52.04 %), followed by fragments (39.80 %) and films (8.16 %). The average quantity of microplastics per individual was calculated to be 9.4 ± 10.4 particles, with an estimated daily intake of microplastics at 32.2 particles per day. These figures are lower than estimates derived from both daily microplastic consumption alone and notably, those calculated from stool analyses. Our study also suggests that the breakdown or transformation of microplastics cannot be ruled out during their passage through the digestive tract. Although the number of microplastics in stomach contents reported in this study was even lower than the daily microplastic intake rates reported in the literature, it provides conclusive evidence for the presence of microplastics in the human stomach and provides important preliminary data in terms of the risks that may arise for human health.

Molecular gut-content analysis has revolutionized the study of food webs and feeding inter- actions, allowing the detection of prey DNA within the gut of many organisms. However, suc- cessful prey detection is a challenging procedure in which many factors affect every step, starting from the DNA extraction process. Spiders are liquid feeders with branched gut diver- ticula extending into their legs and throughout the prosoma, thus digestion takes places in different parts of the body and simple gut dissection is not possible. In this study, we investi- gated differences in prey detectability in DNA extracts from different parts of the spider ́s body: legs, prosoma and opisthosoma, using prey-specific PCR and metabarcoding approaches. We performed feeding trials with the woodlouse hunter spider Dysdera ver- neaui Simon, 1883 (Dysderidae) to estimate the time at which prey DNA is detectable within the predator after feeding. Although we found that all parts of the spider body are suitable for gut-content analysis when using prey-specific PCR approach, results based on metabar- coding suggested the opisthosoma is optimal for detection of predation in spiders because it contained the highest concentration of prey DNA for longer post feeding periods. Other spi- ders may show different results compared to D. verneaui, but given similarities in the physi- ology and digestion in different families, it is reasonable to assume this to be common across species and this approach having broad utility across spiders.

A high-starch vs. high-fibre diet: effects on the gut environment of the different intestinal compartments of the horse digestive tract

Background
Horses are often fed high amounts of starch in their diets despite the well-established benefits of a fibre-based diet to promote gut health and animal welfare. The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of two different diets – one based on high amounts of starch (HS) vs. one base on high amounts of fibre (HF) – on specific parameters of the gut environment across different intestinal compartments of the horse digestive tract. To this end differences in the gastrointestinal environment between HS vs. HF fed horses were assessed in terms of dry matter, organic matter and ash content; the particle size distribution and volatile fatty acid composition were also investigated.
Results
Nineteen Bardigiano horses of 14.3 ± 0.7 months of age and destined to slaughter were divided into two group pens – one fed with high amounts of starch (HS;
n
= 9; 43% hay plus 57% starch-rich pelleted feed); vs. fed with high amounts of fibre (HF;
n
= 10; 70% hay plus 30% fibre-rich pelleted feed). Horses fed HS diet presented a higher dry matter content in the right dorsal colon. Moreover, they showed a higher organic matter and ash content in the sternal flexure, pelvic flexure, right dorsal colon and rectum. In these latter intestinal compartments, horses fed a HS diet also showed a higher proportion of particles retained on an 8 mm sieve and a higher proportion of particles that washed through the finest sieve (< 1 mm). Moreover, the total amounts of volatile fatty acids as well as valeric acid were found to be significantly higher in horses fed the HS vs. HF diet.
Conclusions
A high-starch diet causes significant changes in the horse gut environment. We observed an increase in the dry matter content in the right dorsal colon, as well as reduced particle sizes and an increase in the production of valeric acid in all the gut compartments studied. High-starch diets should be avoided in favour of fibre-based diets with the goal of safeguarding gut health in horses.

Microcapsules of ciriguela peel extracts obtained by ultrasound-assisted extraction were prepared by spray drying, whose results were compared with those of freeze-drying as a control. The effects of spray-drying air temperature, feed flow rate and ratio of encapsulating agents (maltodextrin and arabic gum) were studied. Encapsulation efficiency, moisture content, total phenolic compounds (TPC), water activity, hygroscopicity, solubility, colorimetric parameters, phenolic profile by HPLC/DAD, simulated gastrointestinal digestion and morphology of spray-dried and freeze-dried microcapsules were evaluated, as well as their stability of TPC during 90 days storage at 7 and 25 °C. Spray-dried extract showed higher encapsulation efficiency (98.83%) and TPC (476.82 mg GAE g
−1
) than freeze-dried extract. The most abundant compounds in the liquid extract of ciriguela peel flour were rutin, epicatechin gallate, chlorogenic acid and quercetin. Rutin and myricetin were the major flavonoids in the spray-dried extract, while quercetin and kaempferol were in the freeze-dried one. The simulated gastrointestinal digestion test of microencapsulated extracts revealed the highest TPC contents after the gastric phase and the lowest one after the intestinal one. Rutin was the most abundant compound after the digestion of both spray-dried (68.74 µg g
−1
) and freeze-dried (93.98 µg g
−1
) extracts. Spray-dried microcapsules were of spherical shape, freeze-dried products of irregular structures. Spray-dried microcapsules had higher phenolic compounds contents after 90 days of storage at 7 °C compared to those stored at 25 °C, while the lyophilized ones showed no significant difference between the two storage temperatures. The ciriguela agro-industrial residue can be considered an interesting alternative source of phenolic compounds that could be used, in the form of bioactive compounds-rich powders, as an ingredient in pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries.

Porphyran from Porphyra haitanensis Enhances Intestinal Barrier Function and Regulates Gut Microbiota Composition

In this study, the effects of a homogenous porphyran from Porphyra haitanensis (PHP) on the intestinal barrier and gut microbiota were investigated. The results showed that oral administration of PHP resulted in a higher luminal moisture content and a lower pH environment for the growth of beneficial bacteria in the colon of mice. PHP significantly increased the production of total short-chain fatty acids during the fermentation process. PHP made the intestinal epithelial cells of mice arrange more tidily and tightly with a significant increase in mucosal thickness. PHP also increased the amount of mucin-producing goblet cells and the expression of mucin in the colon, which maintained the structure and function of the intestinal mucosal barrier. Moreover, PHP up-regulated the expression of tight junctions including ZO-1 and occludin, improving the intestinal physical barrier function. The results of 16S rRNA sequencing showed that PHP regulated the composition of gut microbiota in mice, increasing the richness and diversity of gut microbiota and the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes. This study revealed that the intake of PHP is beneficial for the gastrointestinal tract and PHP could be a potential source of prebiotics in the functional food and pharmaceutical industries.
