Ways of belonging : undocumented youth in the shadow of illegality
Hart–SLSA Prize for Early Career Academics, Socio-Legal Studies Association Ways of Belonging examines the experiences of undocumented young people who are excluded from K–12 schools in Canada and are rendered invisible to the education system. Canadian law doesn't mention the existence of undocumented children, and thus their access to education rests on discretionary practices and is often denied altogether. This book brings the stories of undocumented young people vividly alive, putting them into conversation with the perspectives of the different actors in schools and courts who fail to include these young people. Drawing on long-term ethnographic fieldwork, Francesca Meloni shows how ambivalence shapes the lives of young people who are caught between the desire to belong and the impossibility of fully belonging. Meloni pays close attention to these young people's struggles and hopes, showing us what it means to belong and to endure in contexts of social exclusion. Ways of Belonging reveals the opacities and failures of a system that excludes children from education and puts their lives in invisibility mode. From Homemakers to Breadwinners to Community Leaders
In From Homemakers to Breadwinners to Community Leaders , Norma Fuentes-Mayorga compares the immigration and integration experiences of Dominican and Mexican women in New York City, a traditional destination for Dominicans but a relatively new one for Mexicans. Her book documents the significance of women-led migration within an increasingly racialized context and underscores the contributions women make to their communities of origin and of settlement. Fuentes-Mayorga’s research is timely, especially against the backdrop of policy debates about the future of family reunification laws and the unprecedented immigration of women and minors from Latin America, many of whom seek human rights protection or to reunite with families in the US. From Homemakers to Breadwinners to Community Leaders provides a compelling look at the suffering of migrant mothers and the mourning of family separation, but also at the agency and contributions that women make with their imported human capital and remittances to the receiving and sending community. Ultimately the book contributes further understanding to the heterogeneity of Latin American immigration and highlights the social mobility of Afro-Caribbean and indigenous migrant women in New York. 
Enrique's journey

Immigrants raising citizens
An in-depth look at the challenges undocumented immigrants face as they raise children in the U.S. There are now nearly four million children born in the United States who have undocumented immigrant parents. In the current debates around immigration reform, policymakers often view immigrants as an economic or labor market problem to be solved, but the issue has a very real human dimension. Immigrant parents without legal status are raising their citizen children under stressful work and financial conditions, with the constant threat of discovery and deportation that may narrow social contacts and limit participation in public programs that might benefit their children. Immigrants Raising Citizens offers a compelling description of the everyday experiences of these parents, their very young children, and the consequences these experiences have on their children’s development. Immigrants Raising Citizens challenges conventional wisdom about undocumented immigrants, viewing them not as lawbreakers or victims, but as the parents of citizens whose adult productivity will be essential to the nation’s future. The book’s findings are based on data from a three-year study of 380 infants from Dominican, Mexican, Chinese, and African American families, which included in-depth interviews, in-home child assessments, and parent surveys. The book shows that undocumented parents share three sets of experiences that distinguish them from legal-status parents and may adversely influence their children’s development: avoidance of programs and authorities, isolated social networks, and poor work conditions. Fearing deportation, undocumented parents often avoid accessing valuable resources that could help their children’s development — such as access to public programs and agencies providing child care and food subsidies. At the same time, many of these parents are forced to interact with illegal entities such as smugglers or loan sharks out of financial necessity. Undocumented immigrants also tend to have fewer reliable social ties to assist with child care or share information on child-rearing. Compared to legal-status parents, undocumented parents experience significantly more exploitive work conditions, including long hours, inadequate pay and raises, few job benefits, and limited autonomy in job duties. These conditions can result in ongoing parental stress, economic hardship, and avoidance of center-based child care — which is directly correlated with early skill development in children. The result is poorly developed cognitive skills, recognizable in children as young as two years old, which can negatively impact their future school performance and, eventually, their job prospects. Immigrants Raising Citizens has important implications for immigration policy, labor law enforcement, and the structure of community services for immigrant families. In addition to low income and educational levels, undocumented parents experience hardships due to their status that have potentially lifelong consequences for their children. With nothing less than the future contributions of these children at stake, the book presents a rigorous and sobering argument that the price for ignoring this reality may be too high to pay. The struggles of identity, education, and agency in the lives of undocumented students : the burden of hyperdocumentation
This book weaves together two distinct and powerfully related sources of knowledge: the author's journey and transition from a once undocumented immigrant from Guatemala to a hyperdocumented academic, and five years of on-going national research on the identity, education, and agency of undocumented college students. In interlacing both personal experiences with findings from her empirical qualitative research, Chang explores practical and theoretical pedagogical, curricular, and policy-related discussions around issues that impact undocumented immigrants while provide compelling rich narrative vignettes. Collectively, these findings support the argument that undocumented students can cultivate an empowering self-identity by performing the role of infallible cultural citizen.
Politics and Prejudice: Using the Term “Undocumented Immigrant” over “Illegal Immigrant”
The presidency of Donald Trump and subsequent interest in issues related to immigration have created controversy regarding how to refer to immigrants living in the USA without documentation. The first part of this paper acts as an analysis of the growing use of the term “illegal immigrant” and the controversy around this term. Given the current debate over using the term “illegal immigrant” versus “undocumented immigrant,” we test the claim that the term “illegal immigrant” causes Americans to support more restrictive immigration policies and view immigrants less favorably. Using Amazon Turk, we distributed two sets of opinion surveys regarding unlawful immigrants. These surveys were identical except that one set used the term “illegal immigrant” and the other used “undocumented immigrant.” The differences in responses between these two survey sets were analyzed. While the term “illegal immigrant” is generally used in more negative contexts than the term “undocumented immigrant,” using one term over the other had little to no effect on how our study participants viewed immigration policy and immigrants themselves. Given prior research about the usage of the two terms, these results suggest that while the decision to use one term over the other is an indication of political ideology, attempts to sway opinion about immigration policy using only terminology may be less effectual than normally believed.

Whose child am I? : unaccompanied, undocumented children in U.S. immigration custody
In 2014, the arrest and detention of thousands of desperate young migrants at the southwest border of the United States exposed the U.S. government's shadowy juvenile detention system, which had escaped public scrutiny for years. This book tells the story of six Central American and Mexican children who are driven from their homes by violence and deprivation, and who embark alone, risking their lives, on the perilous journey north. They suffer coercive arrests at the U.S. border, then land in detention, only to be caught up in the battle to obtain legal status. Whose Child Am I? looks inside a vast, labyrinthine system by documenting in detail the experiences of these youths, beginning with their arrest by immigration authorities, their subsequent placement in federal detention, followed by their appearance in deportation proceedings and release from custody, and, finally, ending with their struggle to build new lives in the United States. This book shows how the U.S. government got into the business of detaining children and what we can learn from this troubled history.
