The microalga Chlorella sorokiniana and the microalgae growth-promoting bacteria (MGPB) Azospirillum brasilense have a mutualistic interaction that can begin within the first hours of co-incubation; however, the metabolites participating in this initial interaction are not yet identified. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was used in the present study to characterize the metabolites exuded by two strains of C. sorokiniana (UTEX 2714 and UTEX 2805) and A. brasilense Cd when grown together in an oligotrophic medium. Lactate and myo-inositol were identified as carbon metabolites exuded by the two strains of C. sorokiniana; however, only the UTEX 2714 strain exuded glycerol as the main carbon compound. In turn, A. brasilense exuded uracil when grown on the exudates of either microalga, and both microalga strains were able to utilize uracil as a nitrogen source. Interestingly, although the total carbohydrate content was higher in exudates from C. sorokiniana UTEX 2805 than from C. sorokiniana UTEX 2714, the growth of A. brasilense was greater in the exudates from the UTEX 2714 strain. These results highlight the fact that in the exuded carbon compounds differ between strains of the same species of microalgae and suggest that the type, rather than the quantity, of carbon source is more important for sustaining the growth of the partner bacteria.
Endogenous Endophthalmitis Caused by Prototheca Microalga in Birman Cat, Spain
We identified Prototheca spp. microalga in ocular samples of a cat in Spain with nontreatable endogenous endophthalmitis. Within 2 years, the eye lesions progressively worsened and neurologic signs appeared, suggesting systemic spread of the infection. On multitarget sequence analysis, the feline pathogen could not be assigned to any known Prototheca species.
Biostimulant Potential of Scenedesmus obliquus Grown in Brewery Wastewater
Microalgae are microorganisms with the capacity to contribute to the sustainable and healthy food production, in addition to wastewater treatment. The subject of this work was to determine the potential of Scenedesmus obliquus microalga grown in brewery wastewater to act as a plant biostimulant. The germination index of watercress seeds, as well as the auxin-like activity in mung bean and cucumber, and in the cytokinin-like activity in cucumber bioassays were used to evaluate the biostimulant potential. Several biomass processes were studied, such as centrifugation, ultrasonication and enzymatic hydrolysis, as well as the final concentration of microalgal extracts to determine their influence in the biostimulant activity of the Scenedesmus biomass. The results showed an increase of 40% on the germination index when using the biomass at 0.1 g/L, without any pre-treatment. For auxin-like activity, the best results (up to 60% with respect to control) were obtained at 0.5 g/L of biomass extract, after a combination of cell disruption, enzymatic hydrolysis and centrifugation. For cytokinin-like activity, the best results (up to 187.5% with respect to control) were achieved without cell disruption, after enzymatic hydrolysis and centrifugation at a biomass extract concentration of 2 g/L.
Seaweed bioactive compounds against pathogens and microalgae: Potential uses on pharmacology and harmful algae bloom control
Cyanobacteria are found globally due to their adaptation to various environments. The occurrence of cyanobacterial blooms is not a new phenomenon. The bloom-forming and toxin-producing species have been a persistent nuisance all over the world over the last decades. Evidence suggests that this trend might be attributed to a complex interplay of direct and indirect anthropogenic influences. To control cyanobacterial blooms, various strategies, including physical, chemical, and biological methods have been proposed. Nevertheless, the use of those strategies is usually not effective. The isolation of natural compounds from many aquatic and terrestrial plants and seaweeds has become an alternative approach for controlling harmful algae in aquatic systems. Seaweeds have received attention from scientists because of their bioactive compounds with antibacterial, antifungal, anti-microalgae, and antioxidant properties. The undesirable effects of cyanobacteria proliferations and potential control methods are here reviewed, focusing on the use of potent bioactive compounds, isolated from seaweeds, against microalgae and cyanobacteria growth. © 2018 by the authors.
Comparison of adsorption behavior studies of methylene blue by microalga residue and its biochars produced at different pyrolytic temperatures
The adsorption behaviors of methylene blue (MB) on microalga residue powder (MRP) and biochars derived from microalga residue (MRB) produced at different pyrolytic temperatures were compared. Six biochars were prepared from residual Chlorella sp. and Spirulina sp. at different pyrolytic temperatures in the range of 200–550 °C. The adsorption kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics, and the effect of pH were studied, and chemical analyses of MB-loaded MRP and MRB were conducted using SEM, FTIR, and XPS techniques. The results found that the pseudo-second-order, Elovich, and Freundlich models could effectively describe the MB adsorption process on MRP and MRB. The thermodynamic results confirmed that the adsorption processes were spontaneous and endothermic. Further, MRP showed an excellent adsorption ability on MB through electrostatic interaction, complexation with oxygen/nitrogen-containing functional groups and π-π interaction. However, massive oxygen-containing functional groups after pyrolysis were lost, leading to a significant decrease in the adsorption capacity of MRB on MB. This phenomenon was further observed with increasing pyrolytic temperature. Overall, this study demonstrated that microalga residue performed better for MB removal compared with their pyrolyzed analogs. Graphical abstract
Past, current, and future research on microalga-derived biodiesel: a critical review and bibliometric analysis
Microalga-derived biodiesel plays a crucial role in the sustainable development of biodiesel in recent years. Literature related to microalga-derived biodiesel had an increasing trend with the expanding research outputs. Based on the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-Expanded) of the Web of Science, a bibliometric analysis was conducted to characterize the body of knowledge on microalga-derived biodiesel between 1993 and 2016. From the 30 most frequently used author keywords, the following research hotspots are extracted: lipid preparation from different microalga species, microalga-derived lipid and environmental applications, lipid-producing microalgae cultivation, microalgae growth reactor, and microalga harvest and lipid extraction. Other keywords, i.e., microalga mixotrophic cultivation, symbiotic system between microalga and other oleaginous yeast, microalga genetic engineering, and other applications of lipid-producing microalga are future focal points of research. Tetraselmis chuii as a Sustainable and Healthy Ingredient to Produce Gluten-Free Bread: Impact on Structure, Colour and Bioactivity
The objective of this work is to increase the nutritional quality of gluten-free (GF) bread by addition of Tetraselmis chuii microalgal biomass, a sustainable source of protein and bioactive compounds. The impact of different levels of T. chuii (0%—Control, 1%, 2% and 4% w/w) on the GF doughs and breads’ structure was studied. Microdough-Lab mixing tests and oscillatory rheology were conducted to evaluate the dough´s structure. Physical properties of the loaves, total phenolic content (Folin-Ciocalteu) and antioxidant capacity (DPPH and FRAP) of the bread extracts were assessed. For the low additions of T. chuii (1% and 2%), a destabilising effect is noticed, expressed by lower dough viscoelastic functions (G’ and G’’) and poor baking results. At the higher level (4%) of microalgal addition, there was a structure recovery with bread volume increase and a decrease in crumb firmness. Moreover, 4% T. chuii bread presented higher total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity when compared to control. Bread with 4% T. chuii seems particularly interesting since a significant increase in the bioactivity and an innovative green appearance was achieved, with a low impact on technological performance, but with lower sensory scores.
Comparative Profiling of Survival, Growth, and Intestinal Microbial Community of Pearl Oyster Pinctada maxima Juvenile in the Industrial Farming: The Feasibility of Using Spray-Dried Microalgae Powder
Industrial farming is an alternative mode for Pinctada maxima juvenile cultivation to avoid mass mortality caused by natural disasters. Suitable and enough food is crucial for successful industrial bivalve farming. To investigate the feasibility of live microalga instead of spray-dried microalgal powder in P. maxima juvenile industrial farming, this study replaces a positive control live microalgal diet [ Isochrysis zhanjiangensis (L-iso) and Platymonas subcordiformis (L-pla)] with spray-dried I. zhanjiangensis powder (P-iso) and P. subcordiformis powder (P-pla). Continuous feeding trials (30 days) were conducted on the P. maxima juvenile (1.2008 ± 0.0009 g initial weight and 30.12 ± 0.05 mm initial shell length), under laboratory conditions. Survival, growth performance, and intestinal microbial community were studied and compared across the groups. Results showed that survival rate (SR) did not differ significantly across the groups (ranged from 84 to 86%, P > 0.05). The growth performance in spray-dried microalgal groups, including total weight (TW), shell height (SH), absolute growth rate (AGR), and relative growth rate (RGR) for SH and TW, was slightly lower than that in live microalgal groups, while the activities of pepsin (PES), amylase (AMS), and lipase (LPS) were significantly higher ( P < 0.05). The best growth performance was observed in the L-iso group, followed by the L-pla group. A 16S rRNA-based sequencing revealed that Proteobacteria was the dominant phylum in P. maxima juvenile intestinal bacterial community under controlled conditions, which accounted for 62–82% across groups. The intestinal bacteria at the genus level were more sensitive to diets, whereas Burkholderia was the dominant genus in both L-iso (66.52 ± 6.43%) and L-pla groups (54.00 ± 5.66%), while Mycoplasma , Alphaproteobacteria , and Oxyphotobacteria were in both P-iso and P-pla groups. The P-pla group got higher ACE, Chao1, and Simpson and Shannon indices ( P < 0.05). The above results suggested that the spray-dried P-iso and P-pla can serve as substitutes for live microalga in P. maxima juvenile industrial farming under controlled conditions. The finding in this study provides basic data to optimize industrial farming technology and healthy management for P. maxima juvenile.
Characterization and Optimization of Culture Conditions for Aurantiochytrium sp. SC145 Isolated from Sand Cay (Son Ca) Island, Vietnam, and Antioxidative and Neuroprotective Activities of Its Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Mixture
Aurantiochytrium is a heterotrophic marine microalga that has potential industrial applications. The main objectives of this study were to isolate an Aurantiochytrium strain from Sand Cay (Son Ca) Island, Vietnam, optimize its culture conditions, determine its nutritional composition, extract polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in the free (FFA) and the alkyl ester (FAAE) forms, and evaluate the antioxidation and neuroprotection properties of the PUFAs. Aurantiochytrium sp. SC145 can be grown stably under laboratory conditions. Its culture conditions were optimized for a dry cell weight (DCW) of 31.18 g/L, with total lipids comprising 25.29%, proteins 7.93%, carbohydrates 15.21%, and carotenoid at 143.67 µg/L of DCW. The FAAEs and FFAs extracted from Aurantiochytrium sp. SC145 were rich in omega 3–6–9 fatty acids (40.73% and 44.00% of total fatty acids, respectively). No acute or subchronic oral toxicity was determined in mice fed with the PUFAs in FFA or FAAE forms at different doses over 90 days. Furthermore, the PUFAs in the FFA or FAAE forms and their main constituents of EPA, DHA, and ALA showed antioxidant and AChE inhibitory properties and neuroprotective activities against damage caused by H2O2- and amyloid-ß protein fragment 25–35 (Aβ25-35)-induced C6 cells. These data suggest that PUFAs extracted from Aurantiochytrium sp. SC145 may be a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders.
Features of the microalga Raphidocelis subcapitata: physiology and applications
The microalga Raphidocelis subcapitata was isolated from the Nitelva River (Norway) and subsequently deposited in the collection of the Norwegian Institute of Water Research as “ Selenastrum capricornutum Printz”. This freshwater microalga, also known as Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata , acquired much of its notoriety due to its high sensitivity to different chemical species, which makes it recommended by different international organizations for the assessment of ecotoxicity. However, outside this scope, R. subcapitata continues to be little explored. This review aims to shed light on a microalga that, despite its popularity, continues to be an “illustrious” unknown in many ways. Therefore, R. subcapitata taxonomy, phylogeny, shape, size/biovolume, cell ultra-structure, and reproduction are reviewed. The nutritional and cultural conditions, chronological aging, and maintenance and preservation of the alga are summarized and critically discussed. Applications of R. subcapitata , such as its use in aquatic toxicology (ecotoxicity assessment and elucidation of adverse toxic outcome pathways) are presented. Furthermore, the latest advances in the use of this alga in biotechnology, namely in the bioremediation of effluents and the production of value-added biomolecules and biofuels, are highlighted. To end, a perspective regarding the future exploitation of R. subcapitata potentialities, in a modern concept of biorefinery, is outlined.
