Public affairs and nonprofit program administrators and directors interested in (or tasked with) implementing undergraduate programs require a resource where they can find information for recruiting and retaining the next wave of public and nonprofit workers.
While similar to graduate public affairs programs, undergraduate programs may differ in curriculum design, recruitment targets, learning outcomes, and community engagement opportunities. Universities may have different motivations in creating an undergraduate program, from a need to generate additional resources, a clearer pathway to master's education, or offering complete degrees in themselves that prepare students for employment in the public or nonprofit sector. Comparing the Effectiveness of Classroom and Online Learning: Teaching Research Methods

As public administration programs extend their online education offerings to reach more time- and place-bound students, and as accredited institutions become interested in documenting teaching and learning effectiveness, the degree to which online students are successful as compared to their classroom counterparts is of interest to teaching faculty and others charged with assessment. By comparing student performance measures and assessments of learning experience from both online and traditional sections of a required graduate public administration research methods course taught by the same instructor, this paper provides evidence that student performance as measured by grade is independent of the mode of instruction. Persistence in an online environment may be more challenging in research methods classes than in other public administration classes. Furthermore, participation may be less intimidating, and the quality and quantity of interaction may be increased in online classes.

In this article, we reconsider our 2011 book
, which was the first of its kind to collect written sources from hundreds of writers inside and outside the public service on the realities and complexities of Irish public service life. Its portrayal of institutional life, state administration and the delivery of public services as they play out within the values expected of public servants aimed to provide a rounded understanding of what is conventionally known as ‘working for the government’.
In the decade or more that has elapsed since publication, the context for public policy and administration in Ireland has significantly changed. We identify what we believe are important narratives arising out of momentous events that have defined recent history and which have affected how the public service carries out its duties. We frame these narratives and bring to the fore our original objectives in the anthology by reflecting on how, in recent academic discourse, storytelling is seen as important to understanding the operation and culture of organisations. We take the opportunity to present and discuss new material, and previously overlooked material, that would earn a place in an updated anthology and maintain our purpose of improving the understanding of the public service.

Every MPA student learns about organization theory but too few learn to \"see\" gender, both within the public service workforce and among clientele of the agency. Because organizations employ gendered structures and processes, it is incumbent on faculty to teach students not just about organizational architecture, but also how to identify the architectural elements that differentially influence women and men. Using a critical gender lens, we demonstrate how this point of view illuminates organizational dynamics that are otherwise assumed to be \"normal.\" With gender silence, inequities are perpetuated. A framework for incorporating gender cognizance in teaching is provided.

Linking theory to television

The Master of Public Administration (MPA) classroom is ripe for teaching opportunities that link theory to practice. Film and television clips are one way to show “practice.” This article explores the use of NBC’s Parks and Recreation, the popular sitcom led by Amy Poehler, as a teaching tool that can be fun and beneficial for stimulating classroom discussion and fostering critical analysis skills. Through a content analysis, it is established that the series includes a vast amount of material that can be utilized in the classroom. Fifty-seven percent of the series’ episodes are applicable in whole or part to help illustrate course concepts and theories, exercise problem-solving skills, or serve as a catalyst for critical thinking. Three specific examples of the utility of episodes in the classroom are presented. Through this research, it is established that Parks and Recreation can enhance one’s teaching arsenal suited for the MPA curriculum.

Nowadays Law and Literature courses become more and more popular worldwide; this is also true for Hungary. Examining these attempts, we may conclude that legal problems do reach the students through mainly fictitious literary stories instead of real cases. Accordingly, the idea of Public Administration and Literature courses can be proposed, as well. Among the reasons to introduce such courses we can detect new demands on the side of the students, the need for the methodological renewal of teaching and also the fact that the National University of Public Service already offers MA levels in administrative sciences. This paper – providing several examples – summarizes the main fields and subjects of public administration showed in fine literature and it also collects those genres by which administrative topics are most frequently introduced.
