يبدأ هذا الكتاب بدراسة عن ماضي القصص القصيرة الذي يتمثل في شكل الحكاية الكلاسيكية المعروفة في الأدب الفارسي باعتباره جزءا من آداب المشرق الإسلامي، كما يقدم الكتاب خلفية ودراسة عن ظهور فن المقامة في الأدب الفارسي وكيف تطورت عنه الحكاية الكلاسيكية لتصل في القرن العشرين إلى مزيج جديد من القصص يجمع بين عناصر المقامة والحكاية وقواعد القصه القصيره الأوروبية، مما أسفر عن شكل من القصص القصيره ذى طابع إيرانى متميز.
