رواية ملحمية ترصد التغيرات السياسية والاقتصادية والأجتماعية في تركيا خلال القرن العشرين عبر الأجيال المتعاقبة في عائلة جودت بيك، الأول مع انهيار الأمبراطورية العثمانية في بداية القرن العشرين والثانى مع وفاة أتاتورك نهاية الثلاثينات والثالث مع الانقلاب العسكري في السبعينيات عندما سئل باموق عن التشابه بين « جودت بيك وأبناؤه» وبين ثلاثية نجيب محفوظ، أجاب « أظن أنى قد أتقاسم مع محفوظ علاقات الشخصيات بالمكان وكتابة الأحياء والشوارع وتناول الأحاديث الجانبية والمؤامرات التي تحكيها النساء ولكن الأمر أكثر عمومية من هذا يشغلنى تحول حياة العائلات الكبيرة حيث يتعايشون سويا كما لو كانوا جماعة موحدة ثم تتفتت الأسرة من البيت الخشبي التقليدي إلى مساكن متفرقة في بناء موحد.
