يسعى البحث إلى إبراز ثراء كتابات أدب الرحلة في زنجبار في العصر الحديث ويستقصي العوامل السياسية والثقافية المشكلة لذلك الثراء. وسيتم تحقيق الهدفين من خلال تحليل كتاب رحلة أبي الحارث للشيخ البرواني، التي طبعت أول مرة بزنجبار 1915 ميلادي. قسم الباحث بحثه إلى أربعة فصول، تتلخص حول ما أسماه بالنهضة المرتقبة، والذي يؤكد فيه أن رحلة أبي الحارث تتموضع ضمن سياق أسئلة النهضة المرتقبة في زنجبار، إشارة منه إلى وجود خطاب نهضوي متعدد الأصوات، يجمع بين الإسلامي والقومي والعلماني، ينشغل بالبحث عن نهضة زنجبار، إلا أن ثورة 1964 ميلادي، والتي أطاحت بآخر سلطان من أصل عربي، وهو السلطان جمشيد بن عبد الله بن خليفة بن حارب البوسعيدي (لا يزال على قيد الحياة)، وضعت نهاية لذلك التطلع، بعد أن قامت حكومة وطنية في زنجبار، سعت إلى محو السمة الإسلامية.
