هذه الرواية المصورة الجميلة المقتبسة عن فيلم الرسوم المتحركة \"المعيلة\" المستوحى من رواية ديبورا إليس، تخبر قصة فتاة في الحادية عشرة من عمرها اسمها بارفانا. تضطر بارفانا أن تتنكر كصبي لكي تؤمن معيشة عائلتها أثناء حكم طالبان لأفغانستان، تعيش بارفانا برفقة عائلتها في غرفة واحدة من مبنى تعرض للقصف في كابول، عاصمة أفغانستان، كان والد بارفانا مدرس تاريخ حتى قصفت المدرسة حيث يدرس وتدهورت صحته. إفترش بعدها بطانية على الأرض في السوق ليقرأ الرسائل لمن لا يجيدون القراءة والكتابة. وفي أحد الأيام، تم توقيفه لحيازته كتبا ممنوعة وبقيت العائلة من دون من يستطيع تأمين معيشتها وتوفير النقود أو حتى من يستطيع التسوق لشراء الطعام. وإذ ساءت أحوال العائلة ووصلت حد اليأس، بقي حل واحد، وبما أنها ممنوعة من العمل وجني المال كفتاة، كان على بارفانا أن تحول نفسها إلى صببي وتصبح المعيلة لعائلتها. سيستمتع القراء بهذه الرواية المصورة المشوقة بقصتها الملهمة ورسوماتها الرائعة.
