الكتاب عبارة عـن قصة مثيرة ومشـوقة، تحكي عـن رحلة اكتشاف، يطوف من خلالها بطل القصة بعدد مـن المدن لكي يختار الأفضل منها. فيسافر أولا إلى \"مدينة النط \" ويرى كل شيء في هذه المدينة ينط، البيوت والحيوانات والنباتات والبشـر كلها في حالة نط مسـتمرة. فيصاب بالهلع ويقرر مغادرتها في الحال، مختارا مدينة أخرى وهي \"مدينة التسـلق\"، ليشاهد الكل منشـغل برياضة التسـلق ففي الأجازة الأسـبوعية يتسـلقون الجبال والمرتفعات، أما في الأيام العادية فيتسـلقون أشـجار النخيل وأشـجار اللوز والرمان، فيصاب بطل القصة بالخوف والاسـتغراب من هـذه المدينة العجيبة، ويقرر مغادرتها إلى المدينة الثالثة، وهي \"مدينة الجري\"، ويشاهد في هـذه المدينة الكل يجري، النساء والرجال والعجائز والشباب والصغار، فيقوم بممارسـة الجري مثلهم، لكنه يصاب بالتعب والإعياء ويقرر مرة ثالثة مغادرة هذه المدينة المتعبة دون عـودة.
