يعتبر الكتاب أهم وأشمل مرجع يتضمن نظرية فرويد في الجنس والذي أحدث ضجة كبيرة بين الأوساط العلمية وما زال الحديث يتجدد عنه كل حين ويعاد تقييمه وحاول فرويد في خلال هذه الرسائل الثلاث أن يبين اتجاه النمو الجنسي السوي والعوامل المختلفة التي تؤثر على هذا النمو وتؤدي إلى الانحرافات الجنسية، فتعالج الرسالة الأولى موضوع الانحرافات الجنسية وتحاول تفسيرها وشرح العوامل المختلفة التي تساعد على حدوثها وأهمية مرحلة الطفولة في تكوين الانحرافات ولذلك قام فرويد في رسالته الثانية بدراسة السلوك الجنسي عند الأطفال والعوامل المختلفة التي تؤثر فيه ثم يتتبع في الرسالة الثالثة السلوك الجنسي إلى مرحلة المراهقة والتغيرات التي تحدث في هذا السلوك بحلول هذه المرحلة.
