إذا كان النص الديني هو أهم تجليات الدين والمكون الرئيس لبنيته الاعتقادية والتشريعية، فإن فهم هذا النص هو تعبير آخر عن فهم الدين نفسه بحسب الكاتب ووفق هذه الرؤية يحاول البحث عن إشكاليات الفهم وضوابطه المنهجية التي تحيط به ويحتاج إليها، فيسأل عن إمكان وجود منهج واحد للفهم يجب اتباعه لفهم الأديان جميعا ؟ ثم يقف في فصل آخر عند الإيمان ودوره في عملية الفهم. لينتقل بعد ذلك إلى البحث عن دور الفلسفة والعرفان وغيرها من المعارف في فهم الدين وتعدد هذا الفهم. ليخلص بعد ذلك إلى الحديث عن موقع علم الكلام الجديد من فهم الدين، أو يسأل عن أثر تجديد الفهم في تجديد الكلام نفسه، عارضا لبعض نواحي التجديد الكلامي عند المفكر الشهيد محمد باقر الصدر.
