يعرف عن «تولستوي» أنه كان مؤمنا بالله، ملتزما بالوصايا العشر، ينشد الحقيقة ما أمكنه، لكنه أيضا كان يرفض أن يكون تابعا لأي تنظيم أو مؤسسة دينية، وبالأخص الكنيسة؛ حيث اعتبرها أمرا طارئا غريبا على المسيحية، احتكر كبارها الحقيقة وفسروها بما يوافق هواهم ويحقق مصالحهم الممثلة في مكاسبهم المادية وسيطرتهم على أتباع المسيح. ولما كانت آراء «تولستوي» في الديانة المسيحية بشكلها الحالي تحتاج إلى صفحات طوال لعرضها، فسنكتفي بقول إنه طالما أنكر بعض الأمور التي رآها دخيلة على تعاليم المسيح الأولى وتخالف ما نادى به؛ فبعد أن هدمت رسالة المسيح مملكة الشر الجهنمية وقيدت زعيمها «إبليس»، عادت الخطايا تشتعل في قلوب البشر من جديد ممهدة لعودة مملكة الشيطان الزائلة، على حد قوله.
