هو كتاب تاريخي علمي يتوجه إلى المعنيين بقضايا الحضارات القديمة وبالمعرفة التاريخية ويتعرض الكتاب إلى مسائل ذات صلة بالتاريخ الإغريقي من منهج الكتابة التاريخية إلى معالجة الحدث التاريخي بعينه، كما يتناول مسألتي السماع والمشاهدة للحدث التاريخي لدى المؤرخ ويتطرق الكاتب في موضع آخر إلى تفحص معطى الوثيقة التاريخية، مقرا أنه لا ينبغي إضفاء قداسة على الوثيقة، التي قد لا تمثل الحقيقة بالضرورة ويتناول سبل تخلص المؤرخ من المرويات الأسطورية بغرض صياغة نص علمي، خصوصا عند تعامله مع التاريخ القديم، إلى جانب تعرضه لمسألة الحدود الزمنية والجغرافية للحضارة الإغريقية القديمة. كما يتناول بالتحليل إجراءات ومفاهيم لا تزال راهنة حتى يومنا هذا كحيازة الجنسية ونشأة مفهوم الديمقراطية وتطور مفهومي الحرية والشعب.
