عكبرا مدينة قديمة معروفة مشهورة، أقدم من بغداد وأخبارها ضافية في كتب البلدان والتواريخ والسير والأدب، خرجت عددا كبيرا من رجال العلم والأدب، فيهم الفطاحل من الفقهاء والأدباء وأئمة المذاهب منهم الشيخ المفيد وأبو البقاء العكبري وابن بطة وابن ماكولا وهارون التلعكبري وابن برهان وابن توبة وابن سطورا وابن كادش وابن نبال العكبري وغيرهم والذين رفدوا الحركة الفكرية والثقافية في العصر العباسي سواء بتأليفهم الكتب في العلوم الإسلامية والأدبية أو في التدريس في المدرسة المستنصرية والمدارس المذهبية أو خطاطين ووراقيين وكتبة.
