الكتاب من أشهر مؤلفات ابن الملقن التي سار بها رواة الأخبار واشتهر ذكرها في الأقطار، كما يقول ابن فهد وهو في تراجم مشايخ الصوفية، منذ منتصف القرن الثاني الهجري حتى أواخر القرن الثامن، أولهم : إبراهيم بن أدهم (توفي161 هجري) وآخرهم معاصره: الشهاب القونوي (توفي بعد 787 هجري)، ويضم (230) ترجمة رئيسية، غير التراجم الفرعية وأتبعه بذيل في تراجم من اشتهر بكنيته منهم ولم يلتزم في ترتيبه مفهوم الطبقة عند المحدثين، من أنها (جماعة من الناس يعيشون في زمن واحد)، بل زاد مفهوم الترتيب الإقليمي، والمعجمي وما سلكه بعض مؤرخي الطرق من إلحاق تراجم المريدين بإمامهم، على نحو ما فعل في ترجمة تلامذة الجنيد، طبع الكتاب لأول مرة سنة 1973 ميلادي في مصر، بتحقيق د. نور الدين شريبه وهو مرجعنا في هذا التعريف، واعتمد في نشرته ثلاث نسخ للكتاب، أقدمها : نسخة المكتبة الآصفية في حيدر آباد.
