يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى تقديم مقاربة محايثة تدرس الأدب القديم من الداخل بغرض الوصول إلى خلاصة تجربته الإنسانية، ومكوناته الفنية الذاتية، وذلك ضمن سياقه الثقافي العام بطبيعة الحال ومن هنا توزع الكتاب على ثلاثة أقسام يتعلَق القسم الأول بسياقات العصر القديم من جهة، ويناقش مسائل الشعر القديم من جهة أخرى، ويبحث في التجربة الإنسانية المقدمة في ذلك الشعر ومعمارية التعبير عن تلك التجربة من جهة ثالثة، ويتضمن القسم الثاني قراءات شارحة وتعليقات ختامية لبعض المطولات والقصائد، ويتحدث القسم الثالث -بإيجاز- عن النثر القديم من خلال الأمثال وسجع الكهان.
