تدور أحداث الرواية حول شخصية البطل رشيد وهو مازال طفلا صغيرا تعرض لصدمة قوية نتيجة مشاهدته لأبه المدرج في دمائه وقد تم تشويه وجهه وأطرافه وهو مشهد سيظل راسخا في مخيلة رشيد طيلة عمره كما ظل لغزا محيرا له لسنين طوال خلال هذه السنين سيكبر رشيد وينهل من خصائص والده حب المناقشة وحب الآخرين والعطف على أبناء جلدته من الفقراء والنظر في أحوالهم رغم قوة الصدمة التي لا زالت ترافقه وتذكره من حين لآخر بهولها ولغزها الذي لم يجد له جواب نباهته هاته وحبه لوطنه وأسرته الكبيرة والصغيرة هي إشارات كافية التقطها أستاذه في مادة الفلسفة الذي سيكون لقاؤه به منعرجا حاسما في حياة رشيد.
