تحكي هذا الرواية عن حياة الكاتب وهو اغتراب عاشه عطوف الكبير مرتين وبطعمين مريرين مختلفين بمظهرين أو وجهين في الزمان وفي المكان وفي ذاته ونفسه وروحه على غلاف العمل لوحة تشكيلية منشطرة عموديا إلى لونين متقابلين الأسود والأبيض توخى عطوف الكبير نفيه بنفسه من وطن لم ينصفه إلى وطن بديل إلى مكان كبنية حكائية تحطمت أحكامه المسبقة عنه على صخرة واقعه فأمسى يعيش على آلام ومواجع مرتبطة بماض فيه الشفقة وحاضر مرير يقول عنه لقد فهمت أن الأنوار التي قرأت عنها ستتحول إلى ظلام.
