يحاول الكتاب الوقوف على مجمل الشروط التي يخضع لها الكلام البليغ، الشعري منه على وجه الخصوص، إنتاجا وتقبلا. فجاء الكتاب، تبعا لذلك، مقسما على ثلاثة فصول، عناوينها كالتالي ؛ الفصل الأول : شروط المقام التعبيري، الفصل الثاني : شروط المقام التأثري، الفصل الثالث : شروط المقام المادي. وقد حصر الباحث عدد الشروط المقامية في عشرة شروط ؛ منها شروط مرتبطة بالمقام التعبيري، وهي شرط الباعث، وشرط القصد، وشرط الشحذ. ومنها شروط مرتبطة بالمقام التأثري ؛ وهي شرط التعقل، وشرط الاشتهاء، وشرط الاعتقاد. ومنها شرطان متعلقان بالمقام المادي، هما شرطا الزمان والبيئة.
