\"العذراء الريفية\" كما أطلق عليها لها في حد ذاتها قصة إذ إن القصص الأولى لتولستوي في تلك الحقبة التي بدأ فيها إستقراره في أملاك أسرته كانت مستمدة من تجارب حياته الخاصة دون أن تتعلق برسالة معينة فلما أقدم على كتابة هذه الرواية كان قد بدأ يهتم برسالته في الأدب الروسي لذا جعل لها نطاقا خاصا خارج نطاق تجاربه الشخصية أما \"بوليكوشكا التائب\" كما أسماها تولستوي فهي صورة لحياة ربما شهدتها أجيال قبلنا في بعض البلاد العربية ولكنها بالنسبة إلى جيلنا صورة جديدة طريفة وتحرك أقصى القلوب الإنسانية صلابة وتعلي من قدر الكرامة والعزة البشرية التي كانت كامنة تحت مظاهر الذل والإستكانة.
