تدور أحداث القصة حول جيرمين التي صدمتها سيارة وهي طفلة، نمت نموا متفاوتا كما ينمو العشب البري. جسمها ظل صغيرا ورفيعا كجسم تلميذة ابتدائية تشارك في مباريات مدرسية للركض، إذ رجلاها أطول مما يحتمله ذاك الجسد الضئيل. وبين أفراد البيت الآخرين، وكلهم ذوو قامات ضخمة، بدت جيرمين أشبه باللعبة التي تتحرك وسط ظلالهم. أما عقلها فتوقف عند ما كانه في لحظة سابقة، أو ربما رجع إلى زمن يسبقه. إلا أن جيرمين التي كانت يومذاك في الخمسين، امتلكت حكمة تقودها، في غالب الأحيان، إلى الحكم الصائب.
