يعتبر تاريخ أوروبا في العصور الوسطى الباكرة من أهم المراحل التي مرت بها القارة الأوروبية فقد مثلت تلك المرحلة لأنها مرحلة تكوين وتشكيل لتاريخ القارة العجوز وأنصب تركيز المؤلف بشكل كبير على تاريخ منعطفا تاريخيا مهما القسم الغربي من تاريخ أوروبا وهو القسم اللاتيني الذي شهد سقوط روما عاصمة الرومان على يد الجماعات الجرمانية فاأنتقلت أوروبا بذلك من العصور القديمة إلى العصور الوسطى وتشكلت ممالك وأمبراطوريات جديدة كان أخرها إمبراطورية شارلمان التي أنقسمت فيما بعد إلى عدد من الدويلات على أساس عرقي وأصبحت الأساس الذي بنيت عليه الدول القومية الحديثة مثل فرنسا وألمانيا وإيطاليا وغيرها.
