سارتورس هي أولى سلسلة من الروايات يصف فيها فوكنر اضمحلال أسرتي كومبسون وسارتورس، ممثلي الجنوب القديم وعلو نجم أسرة سنوبس الفجة التي لا تلقي بالا لمتطلبات الضمير والمهاد الأساسي لهذه الروايات هو (جفرسون.. صورة مركبة للحياة في إقليم المسيسبي في مقاطعة (يوكناباتاوا) التي ابتدعها خيال المؤلف وتحكي (سارتورس) رواية عن الصراع بين الواقع والوهم، بين ماض آخذ في الزوال وحاضر آخذ في الهيمنة. هذه رواية ذات نفس ملحمي، تجمع بين ذكريات الحرب الأهلية وذكريات الحرب العالمية الأولى. كما تصور زوال مجتمع تقليدي، بخيره وشره.
