يضم الكتاب فصول خمسة تسبقها مقدمة وتعقبها خاتمة ويرصد الأحداث المهمة في العقد الأول من القرن التاسع عشر والتي شكلت نواة امتداد النفوذ البريطاني وأبرزت المناورات الغربية في منطقة الخليج، أما مقدمة الكتاب فيبرز فيها المؤلف عثوره على دفتر يوميات ديفيد سيتون التي كتبها بخط يده، ثم تبين له أي المؤلف أن ذلك الدفتر غير مكتمل لأسباب سردها في موضعها ويصل بعد ذلك إلى أن النسخة التي حصل عليها من المكتبة الهندية في لندن هي أفضل النسخ فضلا عن كونها بحالة جيدة.
