يتكون الكتاب من خمس قصص القصة الأولى بعنوان \"الباب\" تناقش ظاهرة الجنون يلقي بيسوا الضوء على الجنون من وجهة نظر فلسفية، والقصة الثانية \"عشاء جد متميز\" هنا بيسوا يطرق باب الحكايا المرعبة التي قد تنتج من أفعال النفس البشرية، والقصة الثالثة \"السالك\" القصة تحكي عن شاب كان مقتنعا بحياته إلى أن التقى مرة بالرجل ذو الملابس السوداء، والقصة الرابعة \"سرقة في مزرعة فنياش\" وهي قصة بوليسية تحتوي على بعض الثغرات، والقصة الخامسة \"البنكي الفوضوي\" تتحدث عن السياسية وعن المشاكل الاجتماعية من خلال حوار بين شخصين يحاول من خلاله عرض وجهة نظر فلسفية.
