يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى محاولة الربط بين الظروف الاجتماعية والاقتصادية التي عاشها المجتمع المصري على مدار ثلث قرن، وطبيعة الموضوعات التي ظهرت في تراث علم الاجتماع الريفي في هذه الفترة، فإنه تيسيرا لعملية التحليل، ونظرا للتحولات الهائلة التي شهدها المجتمع المصري خلال هذه الفترة، تم تقسيم هذه الفترة من عام 1970 وحتى عام 2000 إلى ثلاث فترات أو مراحل زمنية تمثل كل مرحلة منها عقدا من الزمان المرحلة الأولى وتقع في الفترة من 1970 وحتى عام 1979، المرحلة الثانية فتمتد من 1980 وحتى عام 1989، أما المرحلة الثالثة فتبدأ من 1990 وتنتهي عام 2000.
