تنقسم حكايات من أوديسا إلى مجموعتين : المجموعة الأولى تضم قصص أبطال العصابات اليهودية الغريبة التي ظهرت في أوديسا ونشأ بينها إسحاق بابل أو على الأقل سمع قصصها من أقربائه، والمجموعة الثانية تضم قصصا بديعة من طفولته وظهرت عدة طبعات من المجموعة، وأضيفت لها كثير من القصص فيما بعد، وقد اعتمدت هنا المجموعة المنشورة على موقع كلاسيكات الأدب الروسي Lib.ru والتي تضم خمسة عشر قصة، ويمكن القول أن بابل كان من أوائل الكتاب الذين قدموا نموذج المتتالية القصصية فالأبطال يعاودن الظهور في أغلب القصص وتقدم لنا المجموعة قصصا مترابطة من حيث الموضوع والشخصيات.
