التفكير في موضوع الحرية هو أصلا التفكير في الإنسان ككل، والعكس صحيح، من هنا نفهم الدلالة العميقة لما قاله غرامشي : عندما اعتبر أن السؤال «ما الإنسان؟»، هو في الأصل سؤال عن مصير الإنسان، أي «هل يمكن أن يتحكم ويسيطر الإنسان على مصيره الخاص؟» هل هو حر بما يكفي؟ وهل يمكن أن يصبح حرا أكثر، وبالتالي ما السبيل إلى تقليص الموانع، وتوسيع دائرة حريته؟ إن كل هذه التساؤلات تطرح، بشكل أو بآخر، إشكالا مركزيا : حدود الحرية، أو الإنسانية بين الحرية والإكراه. إن شساعة مجالات التفكير في الحرية، جعلتنا نقوم باختيار منهجي، إذ صنفنا النصوص إلى محاور ثلاث : أولا، الحرية والفرد سواء داخل سياق إشكالي عام، الطبيعة والثقافة، أو تحديدا في إطار فاعلية الإنسان كشخص متميز بالإرادة. ثانيا، الحرية والمجتمع من منظور اجتماعي محض، حيث الإكراهات الاجتماعية السائدة بالضرورة، وقراءتها من زاوية أخلاقية انطلاقا من مفهوم الواجب. ثالثا، الحرية والسياسة سواء منظورا إليها في إطار قانوني، أو في فضاء السلطة ودواليب الدولة.
