تمثل هذه الرواية رحلة مثيرة قام بها المؤلف إلى سوريا في عام 1926 م، أي في فترة الانتداب الفرنسي، وهي من أبرز المحطات التي مرت بها المنطقة العربية. ومن هنا يصف لنا المؤلف الأوضاع بشكل متجرد ومحايد، حيث يشير إلى الأخطاء الفرنسية في فترة الانتداب، مثل الفساد البيروقراطي الفرنسي والتعصب الديني للمسيحيين مقابل الأغلبية المسلمة، فالجنرالات الفرنسيون رأوا أنهم في الشرق لمناصرة دينية فقط، بجانب رصد المؤلف العلماني لكثير من التعديات على خصوصية الشعب المسلم بشكل متعمد، وأصبح الأمر بمثابة احتلال صريح وليس مجرد فترة انتداب أو حتى وصاية، وبرزت المصالح الفرنسية بشكل واضح في كل شبر من الأراضي السورية.
