في عام 1910 م سأل أديب بحريني جريدة «المقتطف» السؤال التالي : ما قولكم في بيع الرقيق أفضيلة هو أم رذيلة ؟ فإن كان الأول، فلماذا يصادره الغربيون، وإن كان الثاني فلماذا لا يقول بتحريمه رجال الدين في الشرق ؟، وتعتبر رواية «ثمن الملح» نص أدبي للروائي البحريني خالد البسام، تناول فيه تاريخ الرق في الجزيرة العربية في زمنٍ مضى، وقد دفع بهذا النص إلى دار جداول لنشره، ليكون آخر نص كتبه خالد البسام قبيل رحيله المفاجئ إلى جوار ربه.
