تصور السنوات الأخيرة من حياة الكابتن نعمت، الطيار المتقاعد، الذي شارك في حرب 1967، وطُرد من الجيش المصري لميوله الاشتراكية المعلنة، ثم ابتلي بعد ذلك بالمثلية الجنسية، فصار يعيش تلك التجربة مفعولا لخادمه الصغير إسلام، إلى أن افتُضح أمره، فطلقته زوجته، وانعزل أولا رفقة خادمه في أحد الأحياء الشعبية في القاهرة، ثم انتهى شيخاً وحيداً يرجع في نفسه أحلامه التي خذلها بتجربة الجيش، بعد أن كان يعد نفسه لحياة الأدب والفنون، وتعتبر \"معركة الكابتن نعمت الأخيرة\" هي الرواية الأولى المترجمة إلى العربية لمحمد لفتح.
