وضح د. جرار في مقدمته للمعجم الواقع في (136) صفحة من القطع المتوسط أنه وقف أثناء دراسته البحثية لرحلة ابن بطولة وما تصوره من حياة سياسية واجتماعية وثقافية ودينية على ظاهرة لفتت نظره حول ورود كلمات كثيرة مفسرة وهي كلمات تعرف عليها ابن بطولة وتعامل معها اثناء رحلته التي زار خلالها بلادا كثيرة ذات لغات مختلفة. ورأى د. جرار كما يورد في مقدمة الكتاب أن المعجم ان يجمع الكلمات المفسرة والمتعلقة بأشياء وأشخاص وظواهر والتي اقتضى ان يضع ابن بطولة ترجمة لها أو وصفا يكشف دلالاتها بعدما أوردها بلغتها الأم. ويكشف المعجم دلالة عدد من الكلمات التي كانت مستعملة في المغرب والأندلس موردا ما كان يقابلها في المشرق العربي بهدف تحقيق قيمة لغوية فضلا عن القيمة الاجتماعية والسياسية والدينية كما يشير جرار في المقدمة.
