قسم المؤلف هذا الكتاب إلى خمسة فصول، عرض في الفصل الأول لتعريف علم الجيولوجيا وناقش أصله، ثم تناول الأغلفة المكونة للأرض بوجه عام، ثم عرض لدراسة الجيولوجيا الطبيعية. أما الفصل الثاني، فقد تناول فيه علم الأحافير، وبين فيه تعريف الأحافير وأهميتها، وعرض للديناصورات كأهم الأحافير المكتشفة. ثم تناول في الفصل الثالث المعادن والصخور، وبين علاقة علم المعادن بالعلوم الطبيعية الأخرى، وطبيعة المعادن، وكذلك بين البلورات والخواص البلورية للمعادن. وبعد ذلك قام في الفصل الرابع بدراسة علم الصخور، وتأثير المناخ في تكوين الصخور (العوامل السطحية). وأخيرا، شرح في الفصل الخامس طبقات الأرض، وبين التاريخ الجيولوجي للأرض، والتغير المناخي في الأرض وتأثيره على التاريخ الجيولوجي.
