طبعت هذه الرسالة من قبل ووقع الخطأ في نسبتها للأديب البغدادي إبراهيم بن المدبر، فجاء هذا التحقيق ليعيد النسبة الصحيحة للمؤلف الحقيقي إبراهيم بن محمد الشيباني القيرواني، وقد كتب بها وأرسلها إلى إبراهيم بن المدبر، وقد سماها مؤلفها بالرسالة العذراء لأنه كما يقول : وهذه الرسالة عذراء لأنها بكر معان، لم تفترعها بلاغة الناطقين ولا لمستها أكف المفوهين، ولا غاصت عليها فطن المتكلمين، ومن الموضوعات التي تطرق إليها المؤلف في كتابه : صناعة الكتابة، وصفات الكاتب، وطبقات الكلام، وحقوق السوقة والعوام، وبدائع الصدور في الرسائل، وما يمدح به الملوك، وخواتيم الرسائل، وما لا يجوز إلا في القرآن، وما لا يستساغ في الرسائل، وحسن الخط، وغير ذلك الكثير من الموضوعات المتعلقة بفن الرسائل.
