سيختلف تاريخ اليهود الحقيقي عن التاريخ الذي دون في الكتب اختلافا كبيرا، فالشعب اليهودي لم يكن له غير نصيب ضئيل جدا في بناء صرح الحضارة الإنسانية، لم يجاوزوا أطوار الحضارة السفلى التي لا تكاد تميز من طور الوحشية، وعندما خرجوا من باديتهم ليستقروا بفلسطين، وجدوا أنفسهم أمام أمم قوية متمدنة منذ زمن طويل، فكان أمرهم كأمر جميع العروق الدنيا فلم يقتبسوا من تلك الأمم العليا سوى أخس ما فيها، أقتبسوا عيوبها وخرافاتها، فقربوا لجميع آلهة آسيا، قربوا لعشتروت ولبعل ولمُولَك، من القرابين ما هو أكثر جدا مما قربوه لإله قبيلتهم يهوه العبوس الحقود الذي لم يثقوا به إلا قليلا لطويل زمن.
