Overview
يمكن حصر تطور روايات المغتربين بثلاث مراحل : الأولى يكون فيها بطل الرواية قد حمل كل عاداته المحلية معه إلى بيئته الجديدة في الغربة. أي أن انتقاله إلى أوروبا انتقال جغرافي حسب، يمثل هذه المرحلة خير تمثيل، توفيق الحكيم. في المرحلة الثانية يكون فيها البطل قد درس بأوروبا وحصل على شهادة، وعاد إلى بلده دون أن يتمكن من الانسجام مع بيئته الأولى. تمثل هذه المرحلة قصة قنديل أم هاشم ليحى حقي، وموسم الهجرة إلى الشمال للطيب صالح، المرحلة الثالثة هي ما يمر بها الروائيون المغتربون في الوقت الحاضر، وفيها يدرس أو يعيش البطل الروائي في الغرب ولكنه لا يعود وهكذا عليه أن يتعايش مع البيئة الجديدة سندرس هذه المرحلة في حينها بتفصيل أوسع من خلال أربعة أعمال أخرى.
