يحكي المؤلف (جرجي زيدان) في هذه الرواية التاريخية عن قصة مديح في حب اثنين (حسن وسمية) لم تستطع الحواجز البشرية ولا العوائق المكانية أن تفصل بينهما، ورغم أن عنوان الرواية هو (الحجاج بن يوسف) إلا أنها لا تذكره إلا في مواضع قليلة كدور ثانوي وليس رئيسي، فقط القصة التي تتناولها الرواية قد حدثت في عهده عندما كان على رأس الجيش الأموي، في فترة حصار مكة ومقتل الصحابي عبد الله بن الزبير (رضي الله عنهما)
