مؤلف هذا الكتاب هو الإمام (محمد بن عبد القادر الرازي) وهو أحد فقهاء الحنفية، كان عالما بالتفسير والأدب، ويتناول في كتابه (مختار الصحاح) الذي قام فيه باختصار كتاب الصحاح للإمام الجوهري، مرتبا مواد الكتاب حسب حروف أوائل الكلمات (ألفبائيا) أسماه كما ذكرنا مختار الصحاح، حيث اختصر على ما لا بد منه في الاستعمال، وختم إليه كثيرا من الفوائد استقاها من \"تهذيب اللغة\" للأزهري، و\"ديوان الأدب\" للفارابي، وغيرها من الكتب اللغوية، وصدر زوائده بكلمة (قلت)، وكل ما أهمله الجوهري من الأوزان ذكره بالنص على حركاته، أو برده إلى واحد من الأوزان العشرين التي ذكرها في أول كتابه. وهو يعتبر معجم لغوي ميسر جاء ميسرا يلبي حاجة طلاب اللغة العربية وأدبائها للوصول السريع إلى غامض اللغة.
