فلا يخفى ما لقي مذهب الإمام الأعظم أبي حنيفة النعمان-الذي نشأ بالكوفة ثم انتقل إلى بغداد، وشاع بعدها في أكثر البقاع الإسلامية من إجلال وإكبار هو به جد جدير-لدى فقهاء الأمة والدارسين لأصول التشريع الإسلامي في الماضي والحاضر، الأمر الذي دعا إلى الأخذ به كمذهب معتمد، فقد ظفر في العهود المتتابعة في ظل الخلافة العباسية والدولة النورية والخلافة العثمانية بالخطوة الكبيرة، فكان المذهب الرسمي والسائد في الشام ومصر والعراق والهند والصين وبخاري ... وقد تتابعت دراسات العلماء لهذا المذهب فاستنبطوا أصوله، ثم خرجوا الفروع على هذه الأصول مستفيدين من أقوال الإمام الأعظم وأصحابه، معتمدين على مرونة التخريج وقوة الترجيح.
