هي حكاية كاتب يسعى وراء الاختفاء، فيحاول أن يحذو حذو الكاتب السويسرى روبرت فالزر الذي انسحب من مجد العالم الأدبي ليعيش في تعاسته الجميلة وليكسب حياته الحقيقة عبر إخفاء هويته في مستشفى للأمراض العقلية، بل أغلو فأقول إنها محاولة لإعادة تمثيل حياة روبرت فالزر، ولا سيما في الثلث الأخير من العمل ؛ حيث يبدأ السارد كل فقرة تقريبا بجملة ثابتة : أوضعت قبعة اللباد على رأسي وغادرت غرفة الكتاب أو الأرواح، وهي نفسها افتتاحية قصة روبرت فالزر.
