يتحدث كتاب \"مقدمة لقصيدة النثر.. أنماط ونماذج\"، تحرير: بريان كليمنس-جيمي دونام، ترجمة: محمد عيد إبراهيم، عن أن قصيدة النثر بدأت من أوائل القرن 19، ولا تزال حتى الآن تواصل تطورها، من شاعر الى شاعر، ومن عقد الى عقد، ومن نظرية الى أخرى. ويؤكد المحرران في الكتاب الصادر حديثا عن الهيئة المصرية العامة للكتاب أنه في 1842، طبع أول ديوان قصيدة نثر وكان بعنوان \"جاسبار الليل\"، بتوقيع ألويزيوس برتران، الذي تأثر به بودلير ثم رامبو الخ. وتقول المقدمة: إن قصيدة النثر ليست أقل جاهزية من الشعر، في تبني الإيقاع والموسيقى، إنتاج المعنى، أو التأثير في قارئ، فهي تقدم تحديا بليغا، لكنها لا تستخدم السطر الأخير كأداة في إحراز أهدافها. ويرصد المحرران أنماطا عديدة لقصيدة النثر اليوم، منها: نمط الحكاية، نمط الصورة المركزية، نمط المجاز الممتد، نمط الومضة، نمط المأثور، نمط التكرار.
