في منتصف التسعينات، نشر كيرت دانزيجر مقالا يحمل عنوانا مثيرا استوقفني \"هل لتاريخ علم النفس مستقبل ؟\". واستهله بملاحظة لافتة \"لا يوجد في أقسام الفيزياء والكيمياء بالجامعات مقررات لتدريس تلك التخصصات، وبالمقابل فقد استمر تدريس مقرر تاريخ علم النفس بأقسام علم النفس بالجامعات، مما يعني أن لدراسته دورا في ذلك العلم وأن مثل ذلك الدور لا يوجد في تخصصات الفيزياء والكيمياء\" ومضى دانزيجر يرصد عدد الدوريات المتخصصة والمقالات المنشورة والرسائل الجامعية المتعلقة بتخصص تاريخ العلم، منتهيا إلى أن الاهتمام بدراسة تاريخ التخصص يبلغ أقصاه في علم الاقتصاد، ويكاد يتلاشى في علوم الفيزياء والكيمياء، وأن الاهتمام بدراسات تاريخ علم النفس كمقرر أكاديمي إلى التلاشي شأنها شأن العلوم الطبيعية، أم إلى الازدهار شأنها شأن علم الاقتصاد ؟، حول تلك الفكرة دارت محاور الكتاب حول تاريخ علم النفس الحديث.
