هذا الكتاب يدرس معركة الأنوار ضد الظلمات إما بشكل مباشر وإما بشكل غير مباشر. المقصود: إما من خلال التراث العربي الإسلامي نفسه وإما من خلال التراث الأوروبي العلماني الحديث. فكما أن فولتير وروسو والموسوعيين خاضوا معركة الأنوار ضد الظلامية المسيحية التي كانت مهيمنة على عصرهم، فإن المثقفين العرب يخوضون ذات المعركة ضد الظلاميين المهيمنين حاليا على برامج التعليم والفضائيات والجوامع والجامعات (أو على قسم كبير منها). الفرق الوحيد بيننا وبينهم هو التفاوت الزمني الذي يتراوح بين مائتي سنة وثلاثمائة سنة. وهذه هي مسافة التفاوت التاريخي بين العرب والغرب.
