تدور أحداث الرواية في الحرب العالمية، وخاصة آحداث الهولوكوست، فبرونو البالغ من العمر تسع سنوات لا يعرف شيئا عن الحل النهائي أو الهولوكوست. إنه غافل عن الأعمال الوحشية المروعة التي تمارسها بلاده على شعب أوروبا. كل ما يعرفه هو أنه تم نقله من منزل مريح في برلين إلى منزل في منطقة مقفرة حيث لا يوجد ما يفعله ولا أحد يلعب معه. حتى يلتقي بشموئيل، صبي يعيش حياة موازية غريبة على الجانب الآخر من السياج السلكي المجاور والذي يرتدي زي البيجاما المخططة مثل الآخرين. صداقة برونو مع شموئيل ستأخذه من البراءة إلى الكشف. وفي استكشاف ما هو جزء منه عن غير قصد، سيصبح حتما مستغرقا في العملية الرهيبة.
