تدور أحداث الرواية في تتبع لمصائر فئة تعاني الخصاصة والتهميش في حي بائس بحزام المدينة، تستن قوانينها الخاصة في مواجهة مجتمع مديني رافض، من أجل إيجاد فسحة عيش ولو بالعنف وخرق المحظور، وفيها أيضا رصد للتحولات المجتمعية في خلفية سياسة ليبرالية عقيمة أدت إلى مظاهرات صاخبة شملت البلاد كلها، وقابلها النظام بالقمع والأسر والقتل. وما أشبه اليوم بالبارحة، فأحداث الرواية تدور في أواسط السبعينات، حيث لغتها وبنيتها الدرامية وسرعة إيقاعها وانتماء شخصياتها إلى شريحة مجتمعية مهمشة لا يربط أفرادها بعضهم ببعض غير الفقر والجيرة والعناد في مطاولة رموز السلطة.
